Sound familiar?

Every first-time China traveler hits the same three walls. None of them are in the guidebooks.

💳

"Why won't my card work?"

China skipped credit cards entirely. Without Alipay or WeChat Pay set up correctly, you can't buy a bottle of water — and both apps reject foreign cards if you register them wrong.

📵

"Where did Google go?"

Gmail, Maps, Instagram, WhatsApp — all gone the moment you land. Install the wrong VPN after arrival and you'll spend your first day offline, locked out of your own hotel confirmation email.

🥡

"What am I even ordering?"

99% of mid-range restaurants have no printed menu and no English. You scan a QR code, a mini-program demands a Chinese phone number, and dinner becomes guesswork.

One afternoon to trip-ready

The checklist walks you from 90 days out to landing day. No research rabbit holes.

Mike, founder of No Worries China

A local who travels like you do

I'm Mike — Captain Mike to the travelers I help — Chinese by birth, traveler by heart. I've explored every corner of my own country and 30+ others, from the Pacific Northwest to the Grand Canyon. I know exactly what confuses travelers in China — because abroad, I'm one too. These guides are what I tell my own friends.

Travelers who stopped guessing

Real trips, real frictions removed.

Set up Alipay on the plane using the checklist screenshots. Paid for my airport taxi 40 minutes after landing — my first WeChat payment before I'd even left the terminal.

— Sarah M., first-time visitor, London

The QR-menu chapter alone is worth the $29. Ordered a full dinner in Chengdu without speaking a word, and the waiter thought I lived there.

— Daniel R., two weeks in Sichuan & Yunnan

Questions first-timers actually ask

Answered straight, updated for 2026 rules.

Do I need a visa to visit China in 2026?

Citizens of 45+ countries — France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Brazil and more — enter visa-free for up to 30 days through end of 2026. US, UK and Canadian passports still need a visa, but the 10-year multi-entry tourist visa is straightforward with the right documents.

Can I use my credit card in China?

Rarely. China runs on Alipay and WeChat Pay. Since 2023 both accept foreign Visa/Mastercard — fee-free under ¥200 per transaction. Setup takes ~20 minutes with the right walkthrough, and must be done before you land.

Do I really need a VPN in China?

Yes, for Google, Gmail, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube and most Western news. Install and test before boarding — VPN sites and unapproved apps are blocked inside China, so you cannot fix it after arrival.

How do I know these guides are up to date?

We verify them against current visa, payment and app rules every week. The badge at the top of this page shows the last check date — and when rules change, buyers get every new edition free for 1 year, by email.

Is the free checklist actually free?

Yes. The 12-page Pre-Trip Checklist is free — it's how most readers find us. Email in, PDF out instantly. No card, unsubscribe anytime.
